We took our first family weekend trip to the lake the weekend after Labor Day. Yes, it has taken me THAT long to put the pics in a smilebox scrapbook! Better late than never, right?

Rice Cereal Adventure

I was going to wait until Dax's 5mo birthday, but he is having a hard time sleeping for long periods of time and the nurse at our pedi suggested cereal. I don't have high hopes for the cereal fixing our 4hr night-time pattern, though. We are only two days shy of 5mo anyway. We made a video to document the momentous event!  Too bad I can't get it to load.  I am on the phone with Panasonic right now trying to get some support!  Wish me luck!

Dax's 5th month

So I realize that it is just a few short days from me needing to do Dax's 6th month, but we have just be too busy having fun!

Baby in Motion

I always thought Baby Dax would roll from his tummy to his back first. WRONG! Today he heaved himself from his back to his tummy! I think it surprised him! He has been throwing his legs around so it shouldn't have shocked me!

Exciting Times!

Time seems to get away from me some how! So much has happened since my last post! Some fun, some not so fun. Let's start with the not-so-fun...
A week ago today, we had our first trip to the ER. Disclaimer: given the chance to do it again, I wouldn't have gone to the ER so quickly. But you know what they say about hind sight. We all know Dax has acid reflux. After nursing one side at his 6:30pm feeding he spit up blood. My first thought was that the acid irritated his throat to the point of making it bleed. I called my pedi office (which was closed) and spoke to the on-call nurse. Her advice was to take him to the ER, so I did. I called Cameron who, bless his heart was still at work, and told him to meet me at Texas Children's Hospital. We arrived at 7pm and were seen by the admitting nurses pretty quickly. Not too much more waiting before we were taken back to an exam room. Wouldn't you know we got there at the dreaded shift change, which always makes things go so much slower. When the ER doc arrived he did a total physical exam and took a look at the burp cloth with the bloody spit up. Dax was in a great mood, blowing bubbles and gurgling the whole time. Dr. Ho wasn't convinced that the blood came from the baby, meaning me. So the doc's advice was to change Dax's acid reflux medication and for me to feed him from one side only for two days and then switch. I didn't rush to fill the script for the new meds. I wanted to speak to our pedi first. I did decide to follow the instructions to nurse on one side, pump the other, and give him a bottle to make up for what he wasn't getting from nursing a full two sides. At 10pm we were still waiting for the discharge papers. By this time Dax is way over due for a meal and really ready for bedtime. Cameron told us to go ahead home and he would finish up at the hospital. As I was exiting 1463 Cameron called me and informed me that the nurse needed to take another set of vitals on Dax. I politely told him to tell her tough you-know-what. He said she was a little peeved, but she would get over it, or not! The next day, when I spoke to Dr. Phillips, he agreed that we don't need to change his medication. He also didn't think it was necessary to only feed on one side. I also spoke to my lactation specialist who said that 99% of the time any blood in a baby's spit up is from the mom (crack/fissure or broken blood vessel). Dax hasn't had any more instances of bloody spit-up since then!
Not-so-fun event number 2: Earlier this month Cameron bought me a fancy smancy video monitor for Dax's nursery. I LOVED it...until a few nights ago. Dax usually wakes up at 11:45ish and 3:45ish to eat. Keep that in mind. Monday morning I wake up at 6:45. Yes, that's right. We skipped two feedings, and my son DOESN'T skip feedings. I reached over to my monitor and punched the button to turn on the picture and what do I see? NO SIGNAL across what should have been my sweet boy. I sprint into his room to find that he has completely busted himself out of his Velcro swaddle blanket. Who knows HOW long he cried and screamed and squirmed. I felt terrible and Summer Infant had to bare the brunt of it. I am getting a new video monitor out of this whole deal. So, the following night to compensate for being a horrible mother that doesn't wake up when her son needs her, I set my phone alarm to go off three times through out the night so I could check to see if my monitor was functioning properly!
On to the fun stuff! We have had Dax sleeping in his crib in his room for a week and a half now! We are successfully crying it out (when needed) for naps! Dax loves to play with his Big Boy 4mo old sippee cup. He is obsessed with putting his fingers, or whole hands in his mouth! He is getting more control of his arms and is able to bring toys up to his and into his mouth. He can roll from his tummy to his back when propped up on a small pillow. We have a standing lunch date with some girlfriends and their babies. We also have a standing swimming date on Fridays. We get together with other fams on Friday nights for fun dinners. Dax loves to smile, blow bubbles and stick out his tongue. And he is particularly amused when you copy him doing these things! Dax had his 4mo check up today. He is 27in long and weighs 17lbs and 1oz. Doc said he looks great and is meeting the developmental check points. He had to get two shots today and he only cried for about 30 seconds! Tough guy like his Daddy already!
I think I am a month behind on my Smile Box creations! I need to do month 3 and month 4!! Stay tuned!

Family Reunion

I was really dreading our drive to Waco for our Family Reunion!  However, Dax really surprised at how great he did!  He was a trooper!  Baby Einstein saved us!  I didn't take any pictures at Cameron Park, so when I get sent some I will have to add them!

Lunch Bunch

Megan and I started a Thursday Lunch Bunch!  Here we are ready to go to Panera!

Play Date at Allie's

Here is Dax's girlfriend, Allie!  Well, he has to share her with Jake!  Allie is 6mo old!  Such a cutie!  We try to get the "itty bitties" together for a play date once a week!  At this point our play dates are more for the mommies than the babies!  They just roll around and gurgle at each other!

Update

Wow! I can't believe it has been so long since my last post! We are just sailing along over here and having a great summer! We have been swimming a few times and are loving it! We are also loving our Friday night dinner group! Cameron had a great first Father's Day! We hung out at the Foster's pool! I took Dax to the doctor today because I thought he had lost a pound. Turns out Dr. Philips thinks the weight at the 2mo appointment wasn't accurate. Looks like he didn't lose weight after all! Whew! But he does think Dax has acid reflux, based on some new nursing behaviors. So we will be giving Dax Zantac three times a day to help with his fussiness during feedings. Tomorrow Dax has his 3mo old photo shoot at Natural Expression's studio. I'm hoping for some smiles! Friday I will be attempting to make Paula Dean's frozen banana split cake for dinner group. Saturday afternoon is Garrett's 1st birthday party! AND Saturday will be Dax's 3mo birthday! We will have officially made it out of the 4th trimester! Busy, busy! I love it!

Memorial Day

We had our first pool party! Ok, so it was just our little fam and Sara and Ross. I didn't even take any pictures of Dax dangling his toes in the pool! Bad, Mommy. Dax wasn't too interested, that's probably why picture time didn't happen. On Monday, I did take some pictures, though!

Happy Two Months!

Today is Dax's two month birthday!  And yesterday was my 31st birthday!  It was a far cry from my 30th celebration!  Marnie came to spend the day with us!  Kim and I went to get pedicures and then Cameron took me to Perry's for dinner!  Great day!  Now our night...not the same.  Dax was fussy and whiney from 1am on!  Needless to say, Mommy didn't get much sleep!  Today Daddy took us to see the house he is renovating!  We love outings!  Tomorrow at 9am we go back to the doctor!  I am excited to see how much Dax weighs (a ton).  I am NOT excited to see my baby boy scream while he gets his shots, though.

Rhythm

Tomorrow marks 8 weeks since Dax made his arrival into the world!  I can't believe my little baby is growing so fast!  I have already started a bag of clothes that he has out-grown!  Is a long dude!
I am happy to report that Dax is now functioning in a pattern.  I wouldn't go so far as to say he has a routine, but he definitely eats, stays awake for a little while, gets fussy, then naps.
We go for 2mo shots next week, and I am dreading it!  He got terribly fussy after his second Hep B shot, so I can only imagine what it will be like after getting 3 shots!

I did it again!

I seem to have gone quite awhile without a post...AGAIN!  So the doctor's visit was uneventful.  Not sure to be happy or sad about that!  There aren't any problems with Dax, he is just fussy, and there isn't much I can do about it!  Of course I'm happy that he doesn't have any major conditions, but having a 'fix' would have been great!
Last Thursday we visited Auntie Kim and she let us borrow the neatest swing!  This swing allowed our little family to have a really great weekend!  Which all came crashing down yesterday afternoon...
Dax loved this swing (for about 2 days)!  They were the BEST two days we have had!  Not only did he take monster naps in it, but he would just be content swinging (awake and NOT crying!!)
Saturday afternoon we attended our first kiddo birthday party.  I had major anxiety about going.  Not only because Dax is so young and kids have so many germs, but I had no idea how he would handle it.  I ended up wearing Dax in his Lucky Baby sling and he was a jewel!  He loved the roar of the party and slept in the sling for an hour and a half!  Once again, making Cameron and I look like liars when we tell stories of his screaming fits!  But, I'll take a tarnished rep in exchange for a few hours of a happy baby!  Sunday we 'helped' Daddy add on to our amazing fish pond!  This required a trip to Nelson's and Lowe's both of which he was fantastic for!  I obviously pushed his limits by attempting to take him to the grocery store next.  He went nuclear in the parking lot, so we headed home.  And that is where the honeymoon ended.  The rest of our afternoon and evening was full of trying to sooth an un-soothable baby.  The night wasn't much better.  And now he has a serious case of the Monday's.  Looks like I won't be going to the grocery store today either...
Pittenger Birthday Party Saturday afternoon
Cameron's weekend project!  The bubbly fountain area is the new part!  He is so handy!

Make it stop...

We are going to the doctor today in an attempt to rule out any MAJOR causes of all the screaming.  I just want to make sure it's not reflux or a milk allergy.  If doc says everything is normal, guess we will just have to grin and bare it!  I'm sure he will be a perfect angel at the doctor, just like every other time!  More later!

WAKE UP!!

So this morning at 1:30am I was woken up.  No big deal, right?  I have a 5week old.  WRONG!  I was not woken up by a baby human, I was woken up by a baby bird!!  The evil huntress, also known as Lexi our cat, drug in a baby bird and was holding it captive in our bathroom!  I woke Cameron up, and very much against his will he rescued the baby from Lexi.  Then we looked at each other with a "now what" look.  We all know that I am a bleeding heart, so we had to save it!  I got a box and a hand towel and we put the baby in for safe keeping.  I didn't want Lexi to get any more babies so I blocked the doggie door and put her in the garage.  After I put Dax back to sleep when he finished his 5:30am feeding it was beginning to get light.  I figured it was safe to let Lexi roam free.  I was all tied up pumping when I heard Lexi tear through the doggie door with an ANGRY mommy bird in tow.  I shouted for Cameron to help, but with the bedroom door shut and our plethora of white noise makers roaring, he couldn't hear me.  I tried to quickly unhook myself and ran for Cameron's help.  Once again, he got up against his will.  We searched the house for Lexi and found her with another baby bird!  We wrestled baby number two away from her and put him in the box with his brother or sister.  Needless to say, the doogie door will remained blocked...until the babies fledge.  Hopefully that will only be a week?  Dax and I drove the babies to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center this morning.  I hope the babies get the care they need and will be released soon!

Mommy-ville

It will be 4 weeks tomorrow that I became a mommy!  I still can't believe it!  Probably because ever since Dax made his arrival known, my life has felt like one long day with a series of short naps!  I have NO idea how all of these mommies blog regularly!  As you can see, I haven't blogged ONCE since Dax's birthday, 3/25/11.
My goal is to blog once a week, and I feel like that is very ambitious!  As for now, let me see if I can do a quick update of our last almost 4 weeks.
So starting week 36 of my pregnancy Dr. Bertles was concerned with my elevated BP.  At our appointment on March 24 we were prepared to discuss the options as far as induction went.  However, doc had other plans.  Once she saw my blood pressure that day, she came into the exam room and without any pleasentries informed us that we had two hours before we needed to be at the hospital.  Baby was coming out...NOW.  Cameron and I were, uh, shocked.  We showered, finished packing, scarfed down Whataburger and headed to L&D!
I spent all of Thursday night having my cervix prepped for delivery.  They inserted tablets to soften me up.  I was hooked up to an IV, contraction monitor, fetal monitor, and had my BP monitered every 15 minutes, needless to say neither Cameron nor I got even a wink of sleep.  And thus began the sleep deprevation!
Friday AM at 6, they started the petocin drip.  Dr. Bertles broke my water, gross, at 7am.  I had my epidural at 8am and contracted all day until 3:40.  THEN I finally got to start pushing!  I only had to push for 20 minutes, thankfully because that was the HARDEST thing I've ever done, before Dax popped out at a whopping 8lbs 10oz and 20.75in long!  Dax had a major bruise on the crown of his head from hitting my pelvis during contractions.  I felt like mother of the year for that.  The nurses informed us that as his body broke down the burise the body garbage may lead to jaundice.
Saturday AM they circumcised Dax and then informed me that I could go home a day early since everyone was doing so well!  BIG MISTAKE!  Saturday night was the worst night of our lives!!  Lots of crying, and NO sleeping.
Sunday AM we had to go back to the hospital so Dax could retake the hearing screening that he failed the previous day.  Talk about stressful.  I was a nervous wreck.  Throughout the entire test I prayed.  But I wasn't praying the right thing.  Just as Dax was about to fail the test for a second time, it dawned on me what to pray...for God's will to be done.  And as I prayed those words, Dax passed his hearing test!  Glory to God!  It was that moment that I realized that Dax was going to be teaching me a lot about faith.
We stupidly sent my mom home Saturday evening.  At about 3am on Sunday AM I was on the phone begging her to come back.  She stayed the week and was a tremendous help!
Sunday afternoon I noticed that Dax looked a little yellow.  We spoke with Dr. McGraw, the on-call doctor at Town and Country Pediatrics.  She was incredibly patient and helpful.  With that being said, she scard the pee out of me.  She was concerned with Dax's lack of diaper output and his large size.  She informed us that we had two hours to get him to pee, or we were heading to the ER.  Cameron and I RACED out to buy formula, just to supplement.  It worked like a charm!  Dodged that bullet!
Monday AM we were heading to the doctor as a billi-baby.  That means Dax was jaundice.  And having jaundice means that you go to the doctor everyother day AND get blood drawn.  My milk came in Monday after the doctor's appointment, thankfully.  But to rid his body of the garbage faster, I continued to supplement with formula.  Two weeks and countless trips to the doctor later, we were no longer dubbed a billi-baby!  WAHOO!  No more jaundice!
I had no idea what mothering a newborn was going to be like.  I think I had false expectations that Dax couldn't possibly live up to.  It has taken me 4weeks, but I have finally figured out that A: my life is no longer my own, it belongs to Dax, B: this is his world and I'm just producing milk in it, C: newborns just cry and it's not necessarily colic, acid reflux, gas or anything else you want to blame it on, and D: according to all of my mommy friends, this is just a phase and everyone promises that "it will get better!"
Well, that is the VERY short version of our first almost 4 weeks of a family with a newborn!  Check out my photo story below of our hospital adventure!
We also did an in-house photo shoot with our wedding photographer.  This is the link to check out his pics!

38 1/2 weeks!

GREAT NEWS!!  The blood work and urine test came back normal!  So my hypertension isn't causing preeclampsia!!  I have had the school nurse check my blood pressure each day.  It is still high so who knows why.  We go to the doctor tomorrow so I will drill her with questions related to baby's health and mine, and how the elevated blood pressure effects everything!
I can't believe my due date is 11 days away!  I have just within the past few days started to get a little uncomfortable.  At the end of the day my back is a touch sore and my ribs feel very tender.
Stay tuned for a report from tomorrow's doctor's appointment!!

37 Weeks...that's full term!

Hey!  Spring Break is AWESOME!!  I love being able to run errands and rest!  And when I go back, I only have two weeks...and a new student.  Strange, I know.  I had a doctor's appointment today!  Heartbeat sounds great and I'm measuring fine, but they are concerned with my elevated blood pressure.  They took a bunch of blood today and I have to do a 24 hour urine collection starting Sunday AM at 6.  They are looking for elevated levels of protein which might point to preeclampsia.  The doctor didn't really say what would happen if that were the case, but what little research I've done points to getting the baby out.  Which isn't a big deal considering the fact that he is actually 'full-term'.  In the meantime I'm drinking lots of water and resting.

Belly Cast

Cameron and I were feeling very crafty this weekend as we embarked on another adventure!  We preserved my pregnant belly in plaster!  I am so blessed to have a husband that puts up with my crazy ideas!  It actually turned out REALLY great!  It is now hanging in Dax's nursery!

MWE Baby Shower

Sniff, sniff.  My last baby shower has come and gone!  My team of fellow 3rd grade teachers threw me a baby shower after school last Friday.  These ladies did a bang up job of showering Cameron, Dax and I!  We enjoyed nachos, cake, fellowship and PRESENTS at Taco Cabana!  It is always so fun to spend time with my fellow teachers outside of school!

Classroom Moms

I am SO blessed to have the MOST amazing mommies in my classroom of 3rd graders!  They surprised me on Friday (March 4) with an amazing baby shower!  They contacted Cameron and my mom and they both were able to celebrate with me and my 18 wonderful students!  We played games, ate cupcakes and opened presents.  It has been so great to be able to share this adventure with my kiddos!

Cameron's Office Shower

Last Wednesday the ladies at Cameron's office surprised him with a Daddy Baby Shower!  What a sweet gesture!  They went all out with cake, munchies and TONS of wonderful baby gifts!  We are so appreciative to them for taking time to plan a special party to welcome Dax into the world!  I wasn't there, so Cameron got to open all the gifts and we had show-and-tell when he got home that night!

BBQ Cook-Off

On February 24 we headed out to BBQ Cook-Off!  It was a totally different experience being pregnant!  It was fun to people watch, and I actually was able to snag a stool to sit on!  There aren't many, but check out the pictures below!

36 week check-up

Cameron and I just finished at our 36 week appointment!  It was the last time we get to see Dax before we actually meet him!  The ultrasound measured him at 7.5lbs.  AND we still have 26 days to go at an ounce per day.  I asked the doctor how accurate that measurement was...and thankfully she said it can be up to about a pound off!  WHEW!  I am not dilated yet, so he isn't coming anytime soon!  I will go to the doctor every week from now on out.  I'm going to take weekly pictures too!
